Sterling Heights officers on Wednesday fatally shot an armed man who police said was having a mental crisis.

The shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. at a home in the 44000 block of Apple Blossom Drive near Hall and Ryan roads, according to the Sterling Heights Police Department.

Officers were called to the location for a welfare check on a possibly suicidal man, police said.

They arrived and spoke with the man, who was "holding a loaded handgun and appeared to be having a mental health episode," officials said in a statement.

Police said negotiators were called and tried to get the man to surrender the weapon for more than an hour.

However, the man pointed the gun at officers, and they were forced to shoot him to protect everyone at the scene, according to authorities.
