DES MOINES, Iowa —
Gov. Kim Reynolds honored several Iowans credited with saving lives over the past year, including a Des Moines man and a New Hartford woman whose quick actions pulled residents from burning homes.
Megan Murray was the first recipient recognized during the Governor's Lifesaving Awards ceremony held Wednesday. Murray helped rescue an 85-year-old woman from New Hartford who was trapped in a house fire. Murray called 911, helped the woman escape the burning home, and stayed with her until emergency crews arrived.
Reynolds also honored John Wonio, whose dramatic rescue happened almost exactly a year ago. Wonio awoke around 1:30 a.m. to find his neighbor’s house on fire. He immediately called 911 and then worked with a Des Moines police officer to get a man and woman out o
