One of my old favorite authors is Henry James , and every once in a while I come across a film based on one of his novels. The Heiress (1949) is a romantic drama of manners directed and produced by William Wyler ( The Letter , Detective Story , Wuthering Heights ). It was adapted from a 1947 stage play by Augustus and Ruth Goetz, which itself was based on Henry James’s 1880 novel Washington Square .
