An anti-Israel protest escalated outside a debate on the two-state solution in Toronto on Wednesday, resulting in two arrests and the removal of two others from the venue. The event took place at Meridian Hall as part of the Munk Debates, which feature discussions on significant global issues. The debate included prominent Israeli figures, such as former U.S. ambassador Michael Oren and former interior minister Ayelet Shaked, who opposed the two-state solution. In contrast, former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former justice and foreign minister Tzipi Livni supported it. Protesters gathered outside the venue, many wearing masks and waving Palestinian flags. They held signs with messages like "The world hates Israel" and "Honk 4 Gaza." One protester, using a megaphone, shouted inflammatory remarks at passersby, including accusations against Zionists. Toronto police reported that a man was arrested for assaulting a peace officer, attempting to disarm him, criminal harassment, and making death threats shortly after 9:40 p.m. A woman was also arrested for criminal harassment. Two individuals who entered the venue were removed for causing disturbances, with one facing a trespass charge. Videos shared on social media depicted confrontations between police and protesters. In one clip, a protester could be heard chanting "War criminals!" while others responded with calls to arrest the debate participants. Opponents of the Munk debate expressed outrage over the inclusion of Israeli politicians, labeling them as "war criminals." The anti-Israel group Toronto4Palestine, along with other organizations, had called for an emergency rally at Meridian Hall and urged for the debate to be canceled. The event's webpage stated, "For many Israelis, a two-state solution is the only viable path to lasting peace, stability in the region, and renewed legitimacy for the Jewish state internationally." It also noted that recent conflicts have complicated Israel's national security in relation to Palestinian statehood. Following the debate, Shaked commented on social media that the event was conducted under heavy security. She noted, "Outside, demonstrations took place. Inside the hall, some useful idiots shouted, but overall, people listened and wanted to learn." The organizers of the Munk Debates did not provide a comment before the publication deadline.
