Major changes are coming to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.
A project that will remove its empty toll booths is set to start next week.
The project is part of a $318 million program to transition all state-owned bridges to open-road tolling. The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge will be the first in California to make the change.
Construction will begin on Tuesday and will involve temporary lane closures over the next few months, but Caltrans said most of those closures will be at night.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
