A Wisconsin man has been arrested after police say he attempted to assault a Hattiesburg officer with a knife during a foot chase along U.S. Highway 49.

According to the Hattiesburg Police Department, officers responded to the 5600 block of U.S. 49 on Dec. 1, 2025, for a report of a suspicious person. As a responding officer approached, the man reportedly displayed a knife.

Police said the officer gave verbal commands, but the man refused to comply and ran. During a short foot pursuit, the suspect fell to the ground. When the officer moved toward him, the man allegedly swung the knife and narrowly missed the officer before fleeing into a wooded area.
