Throughout its 35-year existence, the Bay Rivers District has always fared well athletically among mid-sized schools (formerly Group AA, now Class 2, 3 and 4) in the Virginia High School League.

But, while the BRD has produced plenty of highlights in football, its four state championships since 1990 tie it with basketball for the least of any district boys sport. Naturally, the region championship victories by Lafayette and Poquoson on Friday against arguably more-talented competition has opened some eyes.
