A Liverpool councillor suspended from the city council Labour group has claimed he left rather than being sanctioned. It was revealed last month that Cllr Assen Christov will sit as an independent member after the whip was withdrawn.

According to the largest group on the local authority it was “no longer deemed appropriate” for the Vauxhall ward member, who was elected for the first time in 2023, to sit within their ranks. He is now listed as an independent in the city council’s political make-up.
