Your morning trip to the loo could reveal far more about your health than you think, including your risk of heart disease, according to new research.
Scientists from King's College London say the molecules found in stool samples - left behind after your gut microbes break down the food you eat - can offer a surprisingly accurate picture of both your diet and how healthy your heart might be in the future.
The team looked at data from more than 2,600 people across major UK studies - TwinsUK and ZOE PREDICT1 - and examined more than 650 different compounds produced in the gut. These "faecal metabolites" change depending on what someone eats and how their gut microbiome responds.
