ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones announced on Thursday that she is stepping down from her leadership role.
Jones, who is the first Black legislator or woman to hold the House Speaker position, says she will retain her position as delegate representing District 10 (Baltimore County).
“Seasons are full of change,” she said in her announcement. “Reflecting on my life seasons, my community, commitments, and my life work, I find myself focusing on tomorrow and what lies ahead.”
Jones replaced Speaker Michael Busch after he passed away in 2019. Busch was the longest-serving House speaker in the state’s history.
Jones has been a member of the House of Delegates since 1997. She suffered a personal tragedy earlier this year when her son, Brandon, died.
