ANNAPOLIS, Md. —

Adrienne Jones is stepping down as speaker after six years at the helm of the Maryland House of Delegates, WBAL-TV 11 News has learned.

The 71-year-old Democrat plans to continue to represent the 10th District 10 in Baltimore County.

Jones' public service spans decades having served as a delegate since October 1997. She has also served in Baltimore County government roles and numerous boards, committees and task forces since.

Jones' election as speaker made history in 2019 as the body's first Black speaker and first female speaker. Jones had dropped out of the running due to lack of support, but ballots were cast during a special session in what was an intense contest. She succeeded Michael Busch, who died the month prior .
