LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

The clock is ticking as the U.S. Department of Agriculture set a Dec. 8 deadline demanding mostly Democrat-led states, including Kentucky, share names and immigration status of SNAP recipients.

There's also uncertainty about the consequences if states do not comply.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, during a recent cabinet hearing, said states are refusing to provide the data.

On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear, calling the request unlawful, offered reassurance to more than 600,000 recipients of the federal food assistance program in the commonwealth.

“Kentuckians aren't going to lose SNAP benefits,” said Gov. Beshear. “It would violate a court order that's out there. We've already litigated this and won.”
