WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita Public Schools held a community meeting Wednesday to discuss the early closure of Chester Lewis Academic Center due to newly-discovered structural issues.
The district is closing the school at the end of December instead of at the end of the school year. Students and faculty will transition to the former Cleveland Elementary School building in southwest Wichita over winter break.
Community members expressed disappointment in the hurried goodbye to their history.
“Nostalgia in that building, right there. I went around today making sure I took pictures of all three sides, of all four sides — that’s how important it was to me,” said Debra Franklin, a former student of the school.
