WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Botanica Gardens is celebrating the success of a water conservation project that reportedly saved nearly 5 million gallons of water since it began, far exceeding initial projections.

The project uses reclaimed water from the city’s water treatment plant to irrigate the popular Wichita attraction. The initiative was implemented as part of the solution to drought conditions facing the city and other portions of Kansas.

“How do we reuse that water, how do we eliminate waste, and have that opportunity to claim some of it back and not let it go down to Texas and Oklahoma, we wanna keep it right here in Kansas,” said Dr. Lynette Zimmerman, executive director at Botanica.

The reclaimed water system reduces the garden’s daily city water usage by more than 10,000 gallons.
