William Fastow received Ana Walshe’s “Happy New Years” text right around the stroke of midnight, as the calendar changed from 2022 to 2023. The couple was several states away from each other, but they were planning to meet up in a few days.

“Our plans were to have dinner on Jan. 4 to celebrate New Year’s and to discuss our five and 10-year plans,” Fastow testified on Thursday.

But later on New Year’s Day, he sent Walshe a picture of him teaching one of his kids to ski, and she didn’t answer, he said. So he sent her an emoji of a waving hand. Then a question mark.

“No response,” he said. And none ever came.
