Suspect involved in deadly Omaha Police gas station shootout identified

Omaha Police on Thursday identified the officers and the suspect involved in a deadly shootout at a gas station a day earlier.

Police officials say the man who died at the scene, 28-year-old Juan Melgar-Ayala, was a suspect in a shooting at a Phil’s Foodway near 30th Street and Ames Avenue early Wednesday.

OPD said he was a convicted felon from El Salvador who was not legally in the U.S. Family members report he suffered from mental health issues.

After tracking down Melgar-Ayala at the QuikTrip near 32nd and L streets, police say they ordered him to come out of the bathroom.

Responding officers got an uninjured
