Two dogs are safe and back on dry ground after Rural Metro firefighters and Yuma County Animal Control teamed up Thursday afternoon for a coordinated canal rescue.

Rural Metro firefighters were called out around 2 p.m. after reports that two dogs had fallen into a canal. By the time firefighters arrived, one of the dogs had managed to climb out on its own.

The second dog, however, was still struggling in the water. Firefighters quickly set up a ladder, and one crew member climbed down to help Animal Control officers reach the frightened animal and guide it safely to the edge.

Both dogs made it out without any injuries, Rural Metro Fire said.

The department applauded the teamwork on scene and gave a shoutout to Station 5’s A-shift crew for their fast and coordinated response.
