A Hackensack man arrested in connection with a shooting last year quickly racked up more charges when he tried to flee and hit a police vehicle, authorities said.
Police say 30-year-old Johnnie J. Harris fired a handgun at a man he was arguing with on Newman Street before driving off in an SUV on Oct. 4, 2024, according to a press release issued Dec. 5 by Detective Captain Darrin DeWitt.
Harris was found on Dec. 4, 2025, during a joint operation with Hackensack Police, the FBI North Jersey Violent Crime Task Force, and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department Fugitive Warrant Squad. Police say he was sitting in a parked car on Prospect Avenue in Hackensack when he tried to drive away. His car struck a parked law enforcement vehicle and he then tried to run before officers arrested him after a struggle.
Harris was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to have weapons or ammunition, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault on a police officer.
He was taken to the Bergen County Jail on a complaint warrant for his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack. Police say all charges are accusations and Harris is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Hackensack Police thanked the assisting agencies and encouraged anyone with information about a crime to contact CrimeStoppers of Bergenfield, Englewood, Teaneck, Hackensack, and Bogota.
