For someone who’s well-travelled like Wayne Gretzky, he sure isn’t the Great One when it comes to pronouncing names.
On Friday, the Hockey Hall of Famer was one of four sports legends — including Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neal and Aaron Judge — to draw the names of countries participating in the 2026 World Cup.
However, as Gretzky read out the names, he somehow mispronounced several of them.
The Great One announced Jordan as “Jor-dan”, instead of its correct pronunciation, “jore-don.”
For North Macedonia, Gretzky pronounced it, “mack-a-donia” instead of “mass-a-donia.”
The island of Curacao was pronounced “kur-a-ko” and not the correct “kur-uh-sau.”
According to Gretzky, the country of Türkiye is pronounced “tur-kia” and not “tyu r-key-yeh .”
