A night out turned disastrous when a drunken driver ploughed his car into four people outside a nightclub in Buckie, Scotland. Christopher Parry, who was more than three times over the legal alcohol limit, struck his victims after a night of drinking at Purple nightclub. The incident occurred shortly before 2am on September 21, 2024. Witnesses reported that revellers attempted to prevent Parry from driving away due to his intoxicated state. Michael Rodgers, a fellow clubber, confronted Parry in an effort to stop him from getting behind the wheel. In court, it was revealed that Parry drove off, causing Rodgers to fall to the ground. He then circled the car park, narrowly missing Rodgers again. Parry's reckless driving escalated when he mounted the pavement, striking Ashley Rodgers, Daniel Cowie, and John Taylor, all of whom were standing nearby. CCTV footage presented in court showed the shocking moments of the collision. Prosecutor Lindsey Dalziel detailed the events leading up to the crash, stating, "Michael Rodgers tried to stop the accused driving away by confronting the accused, leaning into the car, grabbing the accused and attempting to remove him from the vehicle, trying to remove the keys from the ignition and pulling the accused out the vehicle." Parry, of Cornhill, Aberdeenshire, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assaulting Michael Rodgers and culpably driving under the influence of alcohol. He admitted to having 99 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, significantly above Scotland's legal limit of 22 microgrammes. During sentencing, Lady Drummond described the offences as serious, highlighting the significant consequences for the victims. She noted the impact on one victim, who reported experiencing daily headaches, dizziness, mood swings, and disturbed sleep, leading to unemployment and severe depression. Lady Drummond sentenced Parry to four years in prison and imposed a six-year driving ban, stating, "In my view, given the seriousness of the offences, the only appropriate sentence is custodial one." The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drink driving and its devastating effects on individuals and families.
