HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - This year marks the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

On Dec. 7, 1941, a surprise attack on Oahu’s naval and air bases drew the United States into World War II.

In less than two hours, more than 2,400 Americans were killed, including 1,177 aboard the USS Arizona. Battleships were sunk or damaged, aircraft were destroyed on the ground, and the harbor fell silent beneath smoke and fire.

Pearl Harbor remains a place of remembrance for those who served, the acts of courage and heroism that occurred, and a reminder of the cost of war.

This Sunday, Dec. 7, from 7:30 to 9 a.m., a remembrance ceremony at Pearl Harbor National Memorial will honor the more than 2,400 Americans who died that day.
