BRIGHTON, MI – A Michigan man received a check for close to $1.8 million Friday after a social media video went viral this week revealing the 88-year-old was reportedly working full-time at a local Meijer because he couldn’t afford retirement.
Australian influencer Samuel Weidenhofer kicked off a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe after meeting Ed Bambas on shift at the store in Brighton. According to a video Weidenhofer posted Dec. 1 , the content creator approached Bambas, an Army veteran and cashier who was recommended online for his hard work.
Bambas told Weidenhofer he retired from General Motors in 1999 but lost his pension after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009. He was working eight hours five days a week at Meijer to make ends meet.
