Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has rolled out a new dedicated initiative to protect women and girls in the city centre after dark. Operation North Star launched in November and is designed to tackle 'priority crime types' such as domestic abuse, drug and drink driving, and burglary.
The force has announced that local police teams across the city have been supporting the 'Winter of Action' by deploying extra resources on the streets at night. The operation targets hotspot areas with plain‑clothes and uniformed officers working alongside the council, universities, licensed premises, and third‑sector partners. Officers intervene with vulnerable people, disrupt predatory behaviour, and make safeguarding referrals where needed.
