BROOK PARK, Ohio – A Michael Drive resident fell prey to a gift card scam, which was reported to police Nov. 21.
The resident was watching videos on his cell phone Nov. 19 when his phone screen froze. A message on the screen instructed the man to call Apple support and provided him a phone number.
The resident called the number and was told that his bank accounts had been hacked. A fraudster told him that Apple needed to empty his bank accounts to prevent additional thefts.
The man was persuaded to go to Giant Eagle in Brook Park and buy four Nordstrom gift cards for $500 each. Then he drove to the Middleburg Heights Giant Eagle and bought five more $500 Nordstrom gift cards.
The man gave all the gift card numbers to the scammer.
