Devin Williams is in the process of tweaking his arsenal as he strives to recapture his old elite form in the back of the Mets ’ bullpen.
During his introductory press conference with Mets reporters on Friday afternoon, the right-hander revealed that he’s been tinkering with a cutter and a new gyro slider this offseason.
The thinking is to give some “breathing room” to Williams’ fastball and changeup. Williams has leaned almost exclusively on those two pitches throughout his career dating back to his back-to-back All-Star campaigns with the Brewers. By mixing in a few new weapons, hitters will then have more speeds and shapes to deal with and they can’t sit on his changeup.
“It’s really something that I’ve felt I’ve needed to do for a while, but I just haven’t put it into play yet,”
