This December, we find ourselves caught between the world as it is and the world as it could be. “Peace on earth to those of goodwill,”  reminds us  humanity still has a chance to right itself. In recent years, the rise of global strongmen has shaken our confidence. They seize the public imagination with blunt force, grievance, and the politics of perpetual suspicion. It can feel as though the democratic virtues we once assumed were permanent fixtures have been pushed to the edges. But history whispers a counter-truth: humanity has come back from darker moments before.
