Syracuse, N.Y. — The public inauguration of Syracuse Mayor-elect Sharon Owens will take place next month in an historic performing arts venue in the city’s downtown.

The Owens transition team has posted a public invitation on the mayor-elect’s Facebook page for a swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Landmark Theater on South Salina Street.

Owens will become the city’s 55th mayor on Jan. 1, succeeding Mayor Ben Walsh, who is reaching his two-term limit.

The Owens inauguration will start at 1 p.m. The ceremony will last about 90 minutes, followed by a reception from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The Owens inauguration carries additional historic significance, after voters elected her to be the city’s first Black mayor.
