The University of Toledo football coaching staff endured another loss Saturday as defensive coordinator Vince Kehres will take over the same position at Syracuse, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Kehres had been with the Rockets since 2020 after a seven-year career as head coach at Division III Mount Union where he compiled a 95-6 record.

The departure follows Toledo’s former head coach Jason Candle, who accepted the job at the University of Connecticut on Saturday.

In 2025, the Rockets had the No. 3 ranked total defense in FBS, also leading the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense (12.2 points per game), rushing defense (89.3), and passing defense (158.4).

Despite Toledo getting its bowl game assignment Sunday, the university has yet to name an interim head coach.
