It’s no secret that the cost of dining out is on the rise. Menu prices are expected to increase by up to 6% next year. But as Tony Siwicki, owner of Silver Heights Restaurant in St. James, points out, there’s more to the story than just price hikes.

Siwicki, who’s been in the restaurant business for decades, says the challenges are only mounting. With food costs soaring and fewer customers opting for alcohol, restaurants’ margins are slimmer than ever — about 2%, down from 5% before the pandemic.
The result is a tough balancing act for restaurateurs trying to keep menu prices manageable while still covering their costs.
“It’s not about profitability anymore, it’s about survival,” Siwicki admits.
