EUGENE, Ore. – The AI-powered license plate reading cameras seen all across Eugene and Springfield won't be up for much longer. On Friday night, the Eugene Police Department ended their contract with Flock Safety.

Rob Sheldon from the anti-flock advocacy group "Eyes Off Eugene" said the announcement came as a surprise.

“Stunned,” Sheldon said. “Pretty much everyone else with Eyes Off Eugene … obviously, very pleased.”

Flock cameras in Springfield will be covered in the coming days, pending their full removal. The decision from Springfield Police came just an hour after Eugene Police announced they ended their contract with Flock Safety.

“It's a really big payoff after months of sustained effort from so many people,” Sheldon said.
