A state senator recently joked New Mexico doesn't need welcome signs since the roads are so poor it's abundantly clear when someone crosses the state line.

But every state has them.

And now, New Mexico has a brand-new batch of them welcoming visitors and residents alike to the Land of Enchantment — potholes and all.

In recent months, the state Department of Transportation installed 21 new "Welcome to New Mexico" signs at key entry points across the state.

Much like the state's roadways, many of the signs were in poor condition, sprayed with graffiti and even riddled with bullet holes.
