A motorcyclist is fighting for his life after a crash with a car left him and two passengers riding pillion in hospital.

Truro Drive was closed for five and a half hours on Sunday (December 7) at the junction of the A689 in Hartlepool after the smash involving an Audi and a motorbike.

The rider of the motorbike suffered a serious head injury and was taken to James Cook University Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Two pillion passengers were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Audi did not sustain any serious injuries.

It happened at about 8.15pm.

The road was closed for several hours while police and crash investigators attended. It reopened shortly before 2am on Monday (December 8).
