NEW YORK (WBNG) — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for reform and stronger safeguards to protect seniors from scams this holiday season.

The senator said more than 4 in 10 Americans have lost either money or their personal information, and on average, seniors have lost $83,000 to scams.

“For seniors, scraping by on social security checks and retirement savings, that’s a hit to the wallet that they absolutely cannot afford,” Gillibrand said.

The initiative is part of her bipartisan National Strategy for Combating Scams Act.

She spoke during a virtual conference about people who have come forward with concerns.
