Former New York Mets second baseman Jeff Kent earned induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday when the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee selected him on his first appearance on that ballot.
He will be inducted on July 26 in Cooperstown, New York, alongside next year’s Hall of Fame class.
Kent’s time with the Mets (1992–96) wasn’t the peak of his career, but it was where he established himself as one of the most productive offensive second basemen of his era.
After arriving in the 1992 trade that sent David Cone to Toronto, Kent quickly became a middle-of-the-order fixture, delivering reliable power and run production at a position not known for either at the time.
He hit 20 or more homers twice in New York, led the team in RBIs in 1994 and 1995, and posted an .88
