CLEVELAND, Ohio — Some of Cleveland’s streets have been plunged into darkness after thieves ripped out nearly 4,000 feet of wire from the city’s streetlights, and they’ve struck more than once.
City officials say approximately 70 poles along Broadway Avenue in Slavic Village were damaged six months ago. And while repairs have been made, many streetlights are still out because wires, which contain scrap metal like copper, have been stolen more than once.
“This has been a pretty widespread issue for us that we’ve been fighting to get under control,” Ammon Danielson, commissioner of Cleveland Public Power, told City Council last Monday.
