WELLS, Maine — As winter temperatures drop across Maine, some homeowners may be having trouble heating their home. A local nonprofit is offering a low-cost solution to help keep the heat in and the cold out.
WindowDressers organizes volunteer-led community builds to create custom insulating window inserts with a pine frame and sealed plastic film.
Heat gain and loss through windows are responsible for about 30 percent of residential heating and cooling energy use, according to the U.S. Department of Energy .
The nonprofit estimates one medium-sized insert can save up to 8.5 gallons of heating oil per year, which roughly translates to a cost savings of $15 to $43 annually, depending on fuel prices.
