The 2025 hurricane season, which ended in November, was predicted to be a busy one but turned out relatively quiet. It was the first time in a decade that no hurricane made landfall in the United States, Jay Grymes, state climatologist, told the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday.
But tropical storms took a heavy toll in some parts of the country, he said.
Two of 13 named tropical storms brought tragedy in their wake to the U.S outside of Louisiana. Over the July 4 weekend, remnants of Tropical Storm Barry brought devastating floods to Texas, where more than 100 people died, including the 27 at Camp Mystic.
On the Sunday of that weekend, in North Carolina, six people died in flooding caused by Tropical Storm Chantal.
