The Department of the Interior (DOI) has introduced a measure aimed at providing American families with financial relief during the holiday season.

The new initiative, dubbed “One Dollar, One Tree,” is meant to substantially lower the cost of Christmas trees and firewood permits on federal lands to a mere $1 per tree or cord, effective through Jan. 31, 2026.

Announced in a Dec. 5 statemen t , the policy is meant to be dual-purpose by providing “meaningful cost savings” while simultaneously promoting “forest thinning and hazardous fuel reduction.”

The agency cites the opening of new cutting areas in overstocked woodlands as a key mechanism for this effort.
