CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Changes to Iowa’s SNAP benefit program will restrict purchases of candy, soda and other items starting January 1, with a goal of encouraging healthy eating among recipients.

Josh Rohn of Marion receives about $300 a month in SNAP benefits. He uses that money to purchase food and drinks that help him take his various medications. But the items he normally puts in his shopping cart will be changing come January 1.

“You’re not going to be able to get any candy stuff which...I agree with it because, yeah, they want us to eat healthy, but some people need the sugar to keep going,” said Rohn, who is diabetic.
