Authorities have released video from a Connecticut standoff and shootout that ended with a 63-year-old man taking his own life and police finding a decomposing body inside. A new autopsy report sheds light on how each person died.
Stamford police engaged in a standoff with Jed Parkington on Dec. 2 at 263 Oaklawn Avenue after a marshal was fired on while trying to serve an eviction notice, according to a state Office of the Inspector General preliminary report released Tuesday. Parkington and his wife were being removed from the home following a foreclosure.
The marshal met Parkington’s wife and dog in the driveway around 9 a.m. As they walked to the back of the house, Parkington pushed his wife out the door and warned the marshal to get her to safety because “this is not going to end well," the report said.
Parkington wore a military-style shirt with a Nazi insignia. Prescott said, “He was also wearing a utility belt with attached items that the Marshal believed might include explosive devices.” The marshal backed away and called Stamford police.
Officers learned Parkington had more registered firearms. A hostage negotiator joined them and reached Parkington by phone, but police said he refused to leave the house. Officers secured search and arrest warrants as armored vehicles moved into place.
A drone spotted grenades, a pipe bomb, and other explosives inside the home as police moved into position, Prescott said. Click here to see drone footage.
The standoff quickly turned violent as Parkington exchanged gunfire with officers on multiple occasions. Two Bearcats, armored personnel carriers, sustained damage to the windshield and were forced to retreat for officer safety.
Parkington also shot down police drones.
Hours later, officers heard one gunshot from inside. A drone flown into the home showed Parkington with a head wound. The medical examiner ruled his death a suicide.
Police made another shocking discovery inside when they found a heavily decomposed body. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy but was unable to determine the age or sex of the deceased.
They died from "blunt impact injuries of the head and torso with gagging," the report said. Authorities have not been able to identify the victim.
The investigation is ongoing.
Stamford police are leading the investigation. They are expected to interview Parkington's wife and others to find more information on the body found inside the home.
