A supervised drug consumption site planned for inner-city Winnipeg may not open as early as expected, as the province moves to expand public consultation, Premier Wab Kinew said Thursday. The Canadian Press first reported the potential delay.

Kinew said the government will hold another public meeting next week, in addition to the two already scheduled. Additional sessions may follow if officials determine more feedback is needed. The site was initially slated to open in January at 366 Henry Ave.

“We want people in the community to be part of this process,” Kinew said, noting that concerns raised by nearby businesses and residents will factor into decisions about the project’s timeline.
