The identity of human remains discovered in Niagara-on-the-Lake by the border with St. Catharines over the summer has been confirmed by the Niagara Regional Police homicide unit.

On Aug. 31, police were called to an area off Read Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake near the Lake Ontario shoreline after a human skull was discovered.

Three days later, full skeletal remains were recovered. At the time, police said the victim died between late 2021 and spring 2025, and that the victim’s description did not match any known missing person in Niagara.

On Tuesday, police said the victim has been identified as a 24-year-old Toronto man who had been reported missing and was last seen in May 2022.

Police said they are not releasing the man’s identity at the request of his family.
