A local performing arts nonprofit asked the Mobile City Council on Tuesday to consider supporting its plans to open a new theater along the I-65 Beltline, since the current plans for the new Mobile Arena do not include one.

Azalea City Center for the Arts co-founder Chris Paragone told councilors the organization is under contract to purchase a Springdale Boulevard building currently occupied by Calagaz Photo and transform it into a state-of-the-art, 255-seat theater. LoopNet.com states the $1.2 million building has 16,390 square feet of space and 50 parking spots.
