INDIANAPOLIS - At age 44 and newly a grandfather, former NFL star Phillip Rivers is coming out of retirement — and back to work. On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts signed him to their practice squad .

Rivers hadn’t played since the 2020 season — and he officially retired in early 2021. The Colts brought him in for a late-season comeback due to recent quarterback injuries.

Rivers would become the oldest active player in the NFL and only the second grandfather ever to play in the league. Quarterback Brett Favre, mainly with the Packers, was the first grandfather to play in the NFL.
