Young Newcastle United goalkeeper Max Thompson is on standby to make his senior debut for the club in this evening's Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
Thompson is expected to be named on the bench this evening at the BayArena and if an injury or a sending off was to happen to number one goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, Eddie Howe would turn to United's fifth choice goalkeeper to make his first appearance for the club.
It is the result of a bizarre situation in which Nick Pope will miss the game through injury and third and fourth choice goalkeepers John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie have not been registered in Newcastle's 21-man squad.
