We may think of homicide as a common crime in Canada, but the reality is that homicides represent approximately 0.1 % of all police-reported violent crimes. However, the rate is used as an important metric for how violent our society is at any given moment.
In 2024, there were 788 homicides across Canada. That’s eight fewer than the previous year. Not a sharp decline, to be sure, but a decline nevertheless. By way of comparison, the City of Chicago, with a population just over 2.6 million, had 499 homicides last year. Going by the number of homicides per 100,000 people, St. Louis had a rate of 53.9. The overall rate in Canada dropped 4 % to 1.91, down from 1.99 in 2023.
