GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - With the Nebraska Legislature set to convene in less than a month, lawmakers are grappling with a potential multimillion-dollar budget deficit while simultaneously working to address property tax concerns.
Grand Island Sen. Dan Quick said he was concerned about both the deficit and how the state may attempt to resolve the issue.
Quick acknowledged that certain tax exemptions need to be removed, but said his main fear was that low- and middle-income families would be hurt by new taxes on necessities like car maintenance.
“I want to start taxing things that are optional, that aren’t things people need to survive,” Quick said.
