KANSAS CITY, Mo - The risk of house fires increases significantly during the Christmas season.

The causes of these fires are typically due to cooking accidents and unsafe decorations. As a result, the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City and Northwest Missouri is urging Missourians to take simple steps to stay safe while celebrating this year.

Cooking safety tips include staying close to anything that is cooking, use a timer to remind you that the stove or oven is on, avoid wearing loose clothing when cooking, and keep kids and pets away from cooking areas.

Decoration safety tips include keeping candles away from anything flammable and keeping any flammable decorations away from heating sources like space heaters. For more information and safety tips visit redcross.org/fire
