KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The family of a woman and child killed in a murder-suicide case is suing the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In the federal lawsuit Michelle Smith accuses the VA of negligence. The suit claims Jerel McGeachy Sr., her son-in-law, accessed a government armory to access a weapon.

McGeachy worked as a police officer at the VA in Leavenworth, Kan.

Investigators said he used the gun he took from the armory to shoot and kill his wife, Dominique, and their son before he turned the gun on himself in April 2024.

Jerel McGeachy Jr. was an 8th grader at Congress Middle School at the time of his death. He was killed less than two months before his middle school graduation.
