SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — A Spalding County deputy died Tuesday after suffering an apparent medical emergency that led to a crash in Fayette County, authorities said.
Deputy Joe Crumpton, 62, was driving a sheriff's office vehicle to the department's Christmas party around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday when witnesses said he appeared to experience a medical event before striking another vehicle and running off the roadway, according to the Spalding County Sheriff's Office.
A witness with Fayette County Emergency Services broke Crumpton's driver's side window with a fire extinguisher and pulled him from the vehicle.
